A new rain-bearing system has entered western Nepal, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
In a bulletin issued at 1:20 PM on Wednesday, the department confirmed that the system is already causing rainfall. Showers are currently being recorded in many areas of Gandaki, Lumbini, and Bagmati provinces, along with a few locations in other parts of the country.
The department had earlier noted that the existing weather system was moving eastward. Rain has now reached the Kathmandu Valley and nearby regions.
Nepal is presently under the combined influence of a western low-pressure system and local winds, the department said.
This afternoon, moderate rain and snowfall, along with thunder, lightning, strong winds, and possible hail, are expected in many parts of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces. Some hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces may also see similar conditions, while light rainfall is likely in parts of the Terai, including Madhesh Province.
Heavy rainfall or snowfall is also possible at one or two locations in the hilly and mountainous regions of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim.
For tonight, the department forecasts moderate rain or snowfall with thunder and lightning in some hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Madhesh, and Bagmati provinces, as well as a few places in other Terai regions.
For Thursday, the department had earlier forecasted persistence of partly to generally cloudy skies in hilly and mountainous regions, especially in Koshi Province, while other areas will see partial cloud cover. Some locations may receive moderate rain or snowfall with thunderstorms. At night, the Himalayan region will remain cloudy, hills partly cloudy, and the Terai mostly clear, with a chance of light precipitation in high-altitude areas.
On Friday, weather conditions will improve, it says, with mostly clear skies across much of the country. However, partly cloudy conditions are expected in hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki. Only isolated areas may receive light rain or snowfall, and similar conditions will continue into the night.
