Flood death toll surpasses 1,000 as 4,599 remain missing

The death toll from the devastating floods has surpassed 1,000, with Nepal Police reporting that 1,010 bodies had been recovered as of 8 am Tuesday morning.

According to the latest police figures, only 56 bodies have so far been handed over to families, while 581 have been buried as part of the ongoing body-management efforts.

The number of people reported missing has risen to 4,599. Among those affected by the floods, 3,453 people are currently staying at holding centres, according to the police.

Earlier, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) had reported that 987 bodies had been recovered as of Tuesday morning 9 am. The bodies were found across several districts, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Tanahun, Nawalparasi East, Nawalparasi West and Chitwan. The number of people reported missing by the disaster agency stands at 3,916.

The NDRRMA breakdown recorded 27 bodies in Rasuwa, 95 in Nuwakot, 55 in Dhading, 65 in Gorkha, 38 in Tanahun, 216 in Nawalparasi East, 170 in Nawalparasi West and 321 in Chitwan.

The disaster has also left hundreds injured and triggered a large-scale search-and-rescue operation. The government had previously reported that 11,814 people had been rescued, with more than 21,000 security personnel deployed across flood-affected areas.

Search operations, relief distribution and the management of recovered bodies are continuing in the affected areas.
